JOHN 14:19-26 (Study number 5)

John 14:19-20 says: “Yet a little while, and the world seeth Me no more; but ye see Me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I Am in My Father, and ye in Me, and I in you.” KJV

Jesus again reiterates the fact that He is in His Father, and His disciples are in Him and He is in them. This will become evident after His resurrection and after they have seen Him in His resurrected body. It seems this 40 day period was a time when only His disciples (more than 500 of them at one time — 1st Corinthians 15:6) saw Him. Evidently, the “world” saw Him no more, because we hear nothing about the religious leaders after His resurrection.

John 14:21-23 says: “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me: and he that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him. Judas saith unto Him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that Thou wilt manifest Thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, if a man love Me, he will keep My words: and My Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make Our abode with him. KJV

You probably remember that in my “introduction to Eddie,” I shared that I asked Jesus a question, which was “do I love you enough?” His answer exploded in me, over me and through me when He told me as important as it was for me to love Him, the more important fact was that He loved me first! Because of that, I believe John 14:21 is my favorite bible verse. Why? Because it reveals how we prove our love to the One Who loved us first by keeping His commandments. There are only 2 of them, because He condensed the 10 commandments down to loving God with all your heart and loving your neighbor as yourself. Then He lists the benefits of loving Him: Father God will love us, Jesus will love us, and He will manifest Himself to us. He manifested Himself to me in a rather unusual way when I saw Him hanging on the cross at the time of His death. But He was proving His point, because that moment in time was the greatest demonstration of love there has ever been before or after His death. But that wasn’t all there was, because then I heard Him speak as well when He spoke of the apple of His eye. Then Judas asked the question they all wanted to ask when he wanted clarification on why He wouldn’t manifest Himself to the “world.” His answer says it all when He reveals that it is because the Triune God, which is made up of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, can only abide in a person who loves Him and keeps His commandments. It is impossible for them to cohabitate with the “world.” That is why it is so important to follow Jesus and make Him Lord of your life (see Romans 10:9-10).

John 14 24-26 says: “He that loveth Me not keepeth not My sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent Me. These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” KJV

Jesus then tells us very plainly how to tell who is not one of His followers. Do they love Him and keep His commandments? If not, they are not a part of His body of believers. And that word came straight from heaven, from Father God! He then goes on to prepare His disciples for the coming of the Comforter, Holy Spirit Himself, Who comes as the Holy Ghost and fire (Luke 3:16 and Matthew 3:11). He will teach us all things and bring all things to our remembrance that He has spoken to us and shown us. And I can tell you from personal experience that if you seek them (and even if you don’t), He will give you the 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit as mentioned in 1st Corinthians, chapter 12, verses 4 to 11, as needed. You can access these gifts by simply asking Jesus to baptize you with His Holy Ghost and Fire! It will change your life!

Next week, we will continue our study in John 14 beginning with verse 27, as Jesus continues to reassure His disciples that everything will work out for the best.
