JOHN 14:7-12 BIBLE STUDY (Study number 2)

John 14:7-9 says: “If ye had known Me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know Him, and have seen Him. Philip saith unto Him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known Me, Philip? He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, shew us the Father?” KJV

Jesus finishes His response to Thomas by saying that having seen Him, he had also seen His (and our) Father. And because of that, His disciples had not only seen His Father, but they now knew Him, as well, all because of their relationship with Jesus. Philip then joins in and says to Jesus (in order to satisfy the disciples questions about what He was saying) just “show us the Father.” Jesus responds by mentioning that in the 3.5 years they had been together, they did not build a relationship that allowed them to really get to know Him. It seems they had not been paying very close attention to His Holy Ghost inspired ministry. So, He reiterates the fact that because they had walked with Him, Father God’s glory, presence and reality had been revealed to them day after day as a result of His ministry. Jesus seems kind of flabbergasted when Philip wants to see the Father after living through all of the powerful and miraculous events recorded in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. After all, they (the miracles) should have proven that He really was the Way, Truth and Life, and the only way to our Heavenly Father.

We’re going to see Jesus double down on His relationship with Father God as we look at the next 3 verses in John 14.

John 14:10-12 says: “Believist thou not that I Am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak unto you I speak not of Myself: but the Father that dwelleth in Me, He does the works. Believe Me that I Am in the Father, and the Father in Me: or else believe Me for the very works’ sake. Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on Me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto My Father.” KJV

Jesus didn’t just speak to Philip, but to all of His disciples, when he challenged their disbelief in His Oneness with His Father. When He said He was in the Father, and the Father was in Him, He was showing all of us where we need to be in order to live a power packed life! We need to first be established in Jesus, and then He will abide in us. He will demonstrate that concept when we get to chapter 15. He gives God the glory for all of His ministry, because Father God dwells in Him and does the works. He then doubles down on the fact that He is in the Father, and Father God is in Him, but if that isn’t possible to believe, He wants all of us to believe Him based on His ministry (check out His life and ministry in the Gospels). Jesus then tells us why it is so important to believe Him and live for Him. It’s so we can do the works that He did, and even greater works! And it’s all possible, because He died and was raised back to life. After 40 days spent (for the most part) with His disciples, He ascended into heaven and now sits at the right hand of God, our Father.

Next week, we’ll begin with John 14:13, as we continue our journey into the supernatural.
